Blogging and Blogging Relations

BLOGGING IS SO 2004-WIRED

-I’m a little confused that the author is critical of blogging while he continues to write a blog himself. He says that twitter, flickr and facebook are the new tools for social media and blogging does not consist of enough brevity.

Breast Cancer Awareness

I was in the library and I noticed small cards that were being passed out to students.  These cards had information concerning Breast Cancer awareness month.  The card seemed like an excellent form of PR because it not only gave advice to students stating “Please remind all of your friends and family that early detection is the best protection!”  This advice gives students the feeling that the American Cancer Society Relay for life is a helpful organization that cares about the health of them and their loved ones.  Therefore, the students will want to visit the website at the bottom of the card and they will feel like the society cares about them and they should make a donation or help out if they can.  This card forms a good relationship between the American Cancer society and the audience in addition to creating awareness for this cause.

Blog Action Day! POVERTY

Poverty touches my heart in a special way since I have witnessed poverty first hand.  Three years ago I attended a church mission trip to Nicaragua.  Upon witnessing thousands of kids literally living in the “dump,” I felt my life was changed.  While our group was there we held a camp about thirty minutes outside of the city in a pretty much deserted forested area for these kids to be able to retreat to.  They were able to shower, have good meals, meet new friends from America, and we taught them about our faith.  Most importantly, however, is what us Americans learned: to be grateful for what we have.  When I returned to America I suddenly noticed the waste our country produces.  An old raggedy t-shirt for us would mean trash, whereas in Nicaragua to these desperate people, it is a smile and even a tear in most cases.

A year later my family and I traveled to Guatemala to pick up Tanner, my newly adopted baby brother.  We visited the orphanage that he was born and lived in for the first seven months.  It is not only touching to witness the poverty stricken neighborhood where my brothers-later in the year we adopted Reese from Guatemala as well-were born, but it gave my family and I a sense of helpfulness.  Tanner and Reese are the absolute loves our lives and on days like today (blog action day) when I am asked to write about poverty I cannot help think about this issue in terms of the way my brothers would have grown up if they had not been adopted and taken into our home.

I think it is terrible how statistics such as 80% of humanity lives on only $10 a day are true when Americans spend $10 on ten songs to download to their ipod while there are people in the world like the un adopted babies in Guatemala or the kids living in the dumps in Nicaragua.  I am returning to Nicragua this January to participate in a medical mission trip knowing that, once again, my life will be changed by witnessing the immense amounts of poverty that other parts of the world face.

Online Monitoring

Dr. V. asked us to use different social media tools to discover what kind of information/opinions were on the internet under the subject of the Wake Forest and Clemson game!

Erin Martin and I did a powerpoint on our research findings as if we were presenting the information to a “busy executive” who needs advice on how to manage Clemson’s stakeholders.

Dr. Stafford – Extra Credit Speaker

Due to confusing “Long” hall with “Lee” hall and walking around in the rain for the first 15 minutes of the speech, I was a little lost when I first started listening to Dr. Stafford. However, I slowly caught on to the main ideas of her lecture. She showed pictures of slightest movement (like a lake with small bugs flying over it) where the object event consists of the situational form of engagement where you become aware of the slightest thing. Another picture which included slightest movement was from a british film maker, McQueen who captured the sun slipping away over a harbor.

Dr. Stafford stated that there is a huge problem of paying attention since it is not automatic and there are certain times in life where we are not “present.” We must ask ourselves what experiences in life we want to be conscious for. She really caused me to think when she asked the question “Where is consciousness located?” It is such a good point that consciousness is not necessarily located in the brain. What if it is located in the heart? She showed pictures where the people in them lacked consciousness. For example, the lady in the picture putting on the bracelet was hardly “experiencing” life at that moment. In public relations, it is important to study attention in order to attract the publics or stakeholders which are important to us.

Images involve our automatic image recovery. Therefore, when we see images we automatically associate other ideas or images that we recall. Public relations uses this by stimulating our perception by using images. PR practitioners can use creativity to escape from “autopilot” and engage their publics through image recovery and turning on their consciousness.

POWERade College Intramurals

The other day I was walking down town Clemson when I saw this POWERade College Intramural poster in one of the doors of a store. It immediately caught my eye because it looked like a form of Public Relations due to the promotion of the college intramural events but at the same time had “POWERade” sponsoring the event.

The website displays the universities who are participating, including Clemson.  Each university forms teams to compete for the championship and schools are knocked out of the rounds as they loose.  The website allows students to post pictures of the games and, since POWERade is served at every game, there are POWERade coolers in some of the pictures as well.  The website also includes two famous football stars Shawne Merriman and Vince Young.

The whole College Intramural event gives students the opportunity to associate POWERade with a fun and competitive event and, therefore, increasing the relationship that the POWERade company has with college students.  POWERade sponsors the event to get their name out to many athletic students and reminds them to drink POWERade by providing it at games.  The two famous football players approving of the competition  makes the POWERade products and event seem even more important because of their status.
