Cheryl Harrison’s post about “blogging into a corner” reminds me about how we have talked about what to include in our blog. I think we have a huge overall niche of Public Relations which can include so many things: examples, thoughts, and social media. Therefore, it’s easy for us in our blogs to not be “backed into a corner” maybe because most of our blog posts aren’t so much of our own new ideas, such as Cheryl’s blog, but more of responses on other people’s actions in the PR world or summaries of what we have learned.
Basically, I think it’s easy for our class to have many opportunities on our own blogs to have countless posts about a variety of topics…especially since we have a “personal” category to talk about anything! I feel like a blog not related to this class would be so much harder to conduct because like Cheryl said-blog 101 says that you should have a niche- and without a professor leading us in a specific direction it would be challenging to find that niche and “stick to it.”

I kinda get the vibe that you think your blog is “discredited” for not being what you consider “new ideas”… trust me, it’s not, and you’re off to a good start with it. Responses to other people’s blogs are pretty common in the blogosphere and some of the case theory stuff you guys post occasionally is pretty cool, too. But whether or not it gets you “class credit” (IDK how this works for you) don’t be afraid to start blogging some of your own random thoughts, NO MATTER WHAT “NICHE” YOU’RE GOING FOR (I’m a hypocrite, obviously, see the blog post you linked to if you don’t believe it) so that next semester, when you’re not required to do this, you have a readership and a building block on which to expand your online brand yourself, without the lovely @prprof_mv to prompt you! (although I’m sure she’d always be there to help!)
Love, Cheryl

Hey again Cheryl
Thanks for commenting…I can definitely see how you would think I’m saying our blogs aren’t so much “up to par” as, say yours hehe…BUT i guess it’s more like I think it would be hard for us to NOT have a class based around public relations/social media and to still have a blog…
I’m glad you think our blogs are pretty cool. I know our responses can be insightful-especially since we have a teacher who knows her stuff when it comes to social media so it’s extremely easy for us to feed off of her since we have such interesting things to think about each week. Haha, and to tell you the truth…not quite sure how we get credit for blogging. I’m just blogging because I’m getting pretty into it and I figure that sure can’t hurt:) There are a few assigned posts which we have every week but other than that I think we can get involved on our own terms.
I hope I can keep up a decent blog after this class..I think it would be a total hodgepodge of topics though, that’s for sure… but come to think of it I do have some strong opinions about some major issues! Gosh that niche would sure be hard to stick to-good luck with yours! I think you should keep writing about social media and then have a “Random” section…You could totally pull it off and I would so read it!

Brittany, I think your blog has a niche and you’re developing a voice of your own.
You’re doing great – that’s exactly what you’re supposed to be doing, go beyond the class assignments and blog your thoughts about PR, communication, and whatever else interests you.
I’m very happy to learn that you’re planning to keep up your blog after class!
…oh, and thank you for the kind comments about the PRinciples course
